Case Study - Project Management Capability
Client Need
A large fast moving consumer goods organisation was
struggling to achieve targeted profit ratios and the returns
expected by shareholders. A strategic review of the business
suggested that significant reductions in cost had to be achieved
for the organisation to achieve its full potential. As a result,
a program was developed that was targeted to identify and
deliver cost saving amounting to several hundred million dollars.
CompAssess Solution
CompAssess was engaged to help build project capability in
two ways.
CompAssess completed an analysis in consultation with senior
managers to identify the success criteria for project leadership
roles in the business. The resultant selection criteria was
applied to ensure that those individuals vested with the responsibility
of delivering major cost reduction projects were endowed with
the essential knowledge, behaviours and leadership disposition.
CompAssess also developed a project management training package
from existing materials and methodologies already in place
in the business. Over a two year period, CompAssess trained
project leaders in effectively applying a cogent and customised
project management methodology to increase the probability
of project success.
Project management training was also extended to all individuals
across the business that were to make a significant contribution
to successful project delivery. In total, approximately 1,500
people were trained in the methodology.
Outcome
Over the course of 2½ years, the organisation increased
its successful project delivery strike rate from between 15
to 20 percent to 86 percent. Collectively these projects delivered
over $AUD300 million dollars of cost savings onto the bottom
line.
